How to Automate Boxcar Trading Accounts With TradingView and NinjaTrader 8

Boxcar Trading allows automated strategies and trade copiers on your own accounts. Here's how to run TradingView alerts through NinjaTrader 8, copy trades, and match Boxcar's rules.

How to Automate Boxcar Trading Accounts With TradingView and NinjaTrader 8

Prop firms are all over the map on automation. Some ban it, some only allow their own tools, and some never say. Boxcar Trading wrote it into the rules.

Boxcar's support center says you may run automated strategies and copy trades across your own evaluation and simulated-funded accounts, and that built-in platform copiers and third-party copier software are allowed. That one sentence is the difference between a firm you can automate and a firm you have to babysit.

Boxcar is a new Rithmic-based futures prop firm with four plan families, account sizes from $25K to $150K, and a free Chicago VPS with every evaluation or straight-to-funded purchase. If you're buying one, use code CROSSTRADE at boxcartrading.com for 30% off.

This guide covers how CrossTrade connects to a Boxcar account, which of Boxcar's rules matter most to an automated strategy, and how to set CrossTrade up so you handle each rule before Boxcar handles it for you.

What Boxcar allows, and where the lines are

Boxcar's automation policy covers your own evaluation and simulated-funded accounts. Each account still keeps its own drawdown, daily loss, position-size, session, and news rules, and Boxcar is explicit that automation does not exempt a trade from any of them. You're also responsible for what your software does: errors, duplicate entries, disconnections, and unexpected fills.

The lines Boxcar draws are about the trading itself. Opposite positions across accounts are prohibited, whether the accounts are yours, another trader's, or at another firm, and that includes correlated products such as long ES in one account and short NQ in another. A first violation can roll balances back to the prior day's level. High-frequency trading and microscalping are out, and an account can be flagged for review when more than half of its profit comes from trades held five seconds or less. BoxcarPayout funded accounts must be flat from one minute before to one minute after high-impact USD news, and breaking that rule breaches the account.

Live accounts are a separate stage with separate terms. On most plans Boxcar starts a live review after five approved payouts, so confirm the live rules with Boxcar before you automate a live account.

How CrossTrade reaches a Boxcar account

Every Boxcar account runs on Rithmic, and Boxcar lists NinjaTrader among its supported platforms. That makes the route simple. NinjaTrader 8 signs in with your Boxcar trading login, and the CrossTrade NT8 Add-On runs inside NinjaTrader and places orders on the accounts it sees.

A TradingView alert fires and hits your CrossTrade webhook URL. CrossTrade passes the order to the Add-On on your machine, and NinjaTrader 8 sends it to Boxcar over Rithmic. Average alert-to-execution time on the NinjaTrader route is about 30 milliseconds.

The route: TradingView alert, CrossTrade, NinjaTrader 8, Boxcar.

Two things follow from that. TradingView is where your signals come from, not where your orders go. Boxcar doesn't list TradingView as a trading platform, and it doesn't need to, because NinjaTrader 8 places every order. And Boxcar has no Tradovate connection, so CrossTrade's direct Tradovate cloud route doesn't apply here. Your automation runs wherever NinjaTrader 8 runs.

Put NinjaTrader 8 on Boxcar's free Chicago VPS

That last point is why Boxcar's VPS offer matters more than it looks.

Buy any Boxcar evaluation or straight-to-funded account and you can add a free Chicago Windows VPS at checkout. It's one per customer, and it stays free while you have at least one active Boxcar account. Boxcar describes the workspace as built for trading software, automated strategies, and trade copiers, so install NinjaTrader 8 and the CrossTrade NT8 Add-On there and both keep running when your own computer is off.

Select the VPS on the checkout page before you pay. If you miss it, Boxcar asks you to contact support with your order reference instead of placing a new order. And while you're on that checkout page, enter code CROSSTRADE for 30% off.

Match CrossTrade's controls to Boxcar's rules

Boxcar's rules are specific, which makes them easy to mirror in the CrossTrade Account Manager.

The trailing Max Loss Limit is $1,000, $2,000, $3,000, or $4,500 on 25K through 150K Prime, Scale, and Payout accounts, and $3,500 or $5,000 on BoxcarFunded 100K and 150K. The floor trails your highest end-of-day balance, never moves down, and locks at your starting balance plus $100. The catch is in Boxcar's own wording: end-of-day describes when the floor rises, not when it's enforced. Open losses count in real time, and touching the floor breaches the account. Set a drawdown threshold in CrossTrade inside that floor, and the Account Manager flattens and locks the account before you get there.

BoxcarPayout funded accounts use intraday drawdown, which follows your highest real-time balance, open profit included. An open winner that round-trips can raise the floor before you ever close the trade, so track the floor against live equity on those accounts.

The Daily Loss Limit is optional on Prime, Scale, and Payout (you choose it at purchase) and set by size on BoxcarFunded. Hitting it closes your positions and stops trading for the session, but it isn't a breach. Set your own daily loss limit in CrossTrade a little tighter, and you decide when the day ends.

Everything must be flat by 4:45 PM ET, Monday through Friday, on evaluation and simulated-funded accounts. Boxcar closes anything still open at the cutoff. That isn't a breach either, but it's Boxcar's exit, not yours. An end-of-day flatten at 4:40 PM ET puts the exit back in your hands.

On BoxcarPayout funded accounts, schedule news-window blocks that are wider than Boxcar's one-minute window, so no alert can open a position into a release.

Each Boxcar rule, and the CrossTrade control that handles it.

On NinjaTrader routes, Account Manager monitors run while the CrossTrade NT8 Add-On is connected. One more reason to keep NinjaTrader 8 on the VPS.

Copy one strategy across every Boxcar account

Boxcar allows unlimited evaluations and up to five funded accounts active at once across all plans. Placed by hand, that's a lot of order tickets for every trade.

The CrossTrade Trade Copier mirrors one leader account to followers inside the same NinjaTrader 8 instance, with independent sizing per follower, execution validation on every order, and auto-sync that reconciles drift every three seconds. Three settings matter on Boxcar.

Keep Invert off. Boxcar's opposite-position rule covers your own accounts, and an inverted follower is a hedge by definition.

Size each follower inside its contract limit. Boxcar caps a full account at 2, 4, 6, or 10 minis (20, 40, 60, or 100 micros) for the 25K through 150K sizes, and BoxcarScale starts funded accounts lower until they earn their way up: a $50K Scale account under $1,000 in profit starts at 2 minis. Boxcar's copier guide notes that a copied order above a follower's limit is rejected, which leaves that follower out of step with the leader.

Run one copier per account. Boxcar's own copier guide warns against running a second copier on the same accounts. If you've used the Trade Copier in R|Trader Pro, turn it off for the accounts CrossTrade copies to.

For the full setup, see the Trade Copier page.

Which Boxcar plan suits an automated strategy

All four plan families come in 25K, 50K, 100K, and 150K, and the evaluation profit targets match across Prime, Scale, and Payout: $1,250, $3,000, $6,000, and $9,000. The differences are in the drawdown style and what happens after you pass.

BoxcarPrime uses end-of-day drawdown in both stages and has no consistency rule in the evaluation, so a one-day pass is possible. Funded accounts add a 40% consistency rule. For most automated strategies it's the simplest fit: one drawdown style and no news rule.

BoxcarScale keeps end-of-day drawdown and drops consistency on the funded side, but funded position size scales with profit. Plan your copier sizing around the starting tier, not the table maximum.

BoxcarPayout lets you request payouts daily once you're eligible, but its funded accounts use intraday drawdown and carry the news rule. It asks the most of an unattended strategy, so set up intraday tracking and news blocks in the Account Manager before you go live.

BoxcarFunded skips the evaluation entirely, with end-of-day drawdown and a 20% consistency rule.
